Advice from Homeschool Moms

Baby Safe, Gluten Free Cloud Dough

One of our goals this year was to start tot school with our little one, the same way we did for older brother.  I think school at this age is about experiencing different things and ideas.  This is why we always start our tot school with sensory play.

Sensory play is more than just making a mess, it is really part of the scientific process. Children develop questions, whether out loud or internally, that leave them to investigate by grabbing, touching, smelling, eating, or general mess making. They use their senses to collect data and attempt to answer the original question. Sensory play helps children develop cognitive skills as well as social, emotional, physical, creative and linguistic skills.

I could go on and on about why sensory play is important — perhaps in a future post. For now, here is a great link I found about developing and cultivating skills through sensory play.

Knowing that our little guy puts EVERYTHING in his mouth, I knew I wanted to make something that was safe.  In case you don’t know, cloud dough is typically made with flour and baby oil. I figured, “What if I made it with olive oil”? Then that night, as if the stars were aligning, I came across Lemon Lime Adventures post for her baby safe cloud dough using baby cereal, and I thought it was a great idea! Although, being allergic to coconut I still made the swap for olive oil.
