Is My Child Dyslexic? – Dyslexia Explained

Many of my readers know that I am Dyslexic. I wrote about my own learning struggles last year.

So, when I got the chance to try out Nessy Learning I jumped right in! I was super interested for a few different reasons. First, although unlikely, I was curious if my son has dyslexic tendencies as I do know it’s genetic (he’s an excellent reader so I didn’t really think so). I also really wanted to check it out as a dyslexic person. I have had several readers contact me about reading programs that could help their child. I always tell them the same type of thing. It has been YEARS since I was in school and there is SO much more help and support now.  Disclaimer: I received  Nessy Parent Pack free and was compensated for my time. As always, all my opinions are my own. Please read my full disclosure policy

So What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a difference in the way the brain processes words. However, it affects much more than reading and writing. It also causes difficulty with organization, math, and memory. Nessy Learning put together this AMAZING e-book called Dyslexia Explained that I highly recommend you checking out. Oh, and it’s totally FREE by the way! It’s also written in Dyslexie Font which I noticed right away and so appreciated! If you don’t know what that is, it’s a font that makes reading easier for people like me!

Did you know 1 in 5 people are dyslexic? Every person is slightly different depending upon what sort of dyslexia they have. It is important to find out what type of dyslexia you have. This will help you to find out which learning approach will work best. This is where Nessy Learning comes in. Inside the Parent Pack is something called Dyslexia Quest. Dyslexia Quest is a 20 minute Dyslexia Screener that is really a game. So don’t think of it like a “test” or anything. My son had SOOO much fun playing Yeti Mountain after he took the Dyslexia Screener. Afterward I could log on and see the areas that he struggled in and what he was better at.

My Child is Dyslexic Now What?

So my son most likely isn’t but he is only five so I’ll keep a look out for any signs. If your child IS however, Nessy Parent Pack is full of fun games that help with reading, spelling, writing and multiplication in a fun, multisensory way using games, videos and worksheets. The Parent Pack includes Nessy Numbers (math) Writing Beach (grammar) Dyslexia Quest (screening) Reading & Spelling (exactly what you think ;)) and a Dyslexia Explained e-book.

My son enjoyed all the games but thought Reading and Spelling was the MOST fun. Phonics awareness was what he scored highest in  so going through and spelling words was fun for him.
